Chapter 36

Lara

After stretching and going through a few katas, Lara felt better. Gar, a sapling compared to Vank’s great oak, brought a tray laden with food and assured her that he was going to keep her safe. Lara snorted to herself once he was safely stationed in the hall, out of earshot. The male ego was a fascinating thing. She’d likely been a pirate for longer than Gar had drawn breath.

Demolishing the narra strips over hot veggies gave her time to reflect. A full day of scanning was more than she had ever done, but Vank’s power enabled her to do more than she imagined possible. The distance they’d covered both amazed and puzzled her. Frankly, she’d been prepared for failure, never hoping for such success on her first attempt to find his people. True, they hadn’t located his immediate family, but he clearly knew the people belonging to the auras they’d found isolated on Cor II. Something about them troubled him, but she chose not to ask about it. That was going to be her line in the sand with him. She was too invested.

There was no rational explanation for why Lara allowed Vank to tag along on her search for his family. Hell, she hadn’t even known it was possible to take someone with her onto the plane of auras. After leaving Hash-Han’s dubious care, she hadn’t travelled there often, but what she’d experienced with Ssszit inside her head on the initial trip to surrender Vank had got her thinking. So, when Vank had requested not to be left out, how to pull him along clicked into place, the picture of what she needed to do suddenly clear.

His knack for locating things was a convenient excuse and, indeed, it had come in handy. But they were becoming too close, her and Vank. She was feeling too much for him, caring about his thoughts and feelings, his struggles, and she needed to head that off. He was going to bond with a Corian female, likely soon, and Lara was going to have to leave before that happened. Already, her heart gave a painful kick in her chest whenever she thought of Vank with someone else, touching another female the way he touched her.

There was no way she would stick around to witness that. Guilt at leaving him couldn’t enter the equation. She didn’t expect him to feel guilty for fulfilling his royal obligation to take a mate. He knew as well as she did that the plan was always to go her own way. No matter what he thought, he couldn’t keep her and be bonded to someone else. That was a common practice on some planets, but she knew it wasn’t a Corian tradition.

Plus, she had her own agenda and couldn’t get sucked any further into his mess. There was really no choice, she had to keep her growing attachment to Vank in check. The more they were physically intimate, the more she craved him. That had to stop.
